THIRD: Iodine deficiency in mothers imprisons them in a lifetime of fatigue, general unwellness, muscle and joint pain, and ill-humor. FOURTH: Poorer folks are often the most affected by deficiency. For the last 50 years, iodine sufficiency in Americans has been steadily declining. The net result is 3-fold. ONE: Americans are less intelligent than they were 50 years ago. TWO: Children are born with IQ deficits that relegate them to behavioral, academic and family problems. And...violence. THREE: Income from taxes is declining because of lower academic ability and motivation in adults, adolescents and older folks. (NOTE: NHANES is the CDC's "National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.")
The International Effect: In 1971, America was NUMBER 1 in world I.Q. Today, America is NUMBER 23 in world I.Q. What happened? a) We stopped using salt as much - on the advice of our doctors. b) Iodized salt sits on supermarket shelves for months, and the iodine vaporizes quickly. c) Fruits and vegetables are no longer watered by iodine-bearing ocean clouds, but by iodine-poor river and well water. d) The animals that eat those plants are also iodine poor. It is a conspiracy? Worth considering.
Scope of the Iodine Problem
It's much worse than you might think. According to the Office of Dietary Supplements at the National Institutes of Health, the problem of iodine deficiency affects about HALF OF ALL AMERICAN WOMEN of childbearing age. Result: Fully HALF of all children are disadvantaged - lacking sufficient I.Q., neurological capacity and brain development to function with full success in our complex and dangerous world.
We are mentally CRIPPLING our children through lack of iodine. It should not, and doesn't have to be that way. Here are the FACTS from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, quoted by the HHS Office of Dietary supplement. These results are shocking. Disastrous. Half of all American babies are born with some level of inadequate brain function.
"Prior to our ability to estimate Iodine intake, professional medical groups recommended all pregnant women in the US and Canada consume an Iodine supplement of (at least) 150 μg/day based on what was known about population Iodine status. 63% of the cohort (800 in the study) had a dietary intake below the recommended intake, highlighting the need for an Iodine supplement to be consumed in pregnancy for most to achieve an adequate intake. Iodine intake was below the recommendation for 41% of the group. Forty-eight percent urinary iodine level below 150 μg/L. Individual Iodine intake and the group's Iodine status suggest Iodine insufficiency in US women was common during pregnancy."
The result is a disaster for women and for their children. Iodine deficiency during pregnancy means a high likelihood of hypothyrodism for the rest of a woman's life - a life of discomfort, general ill-health and a range of health and emotional issues. The impact on America is also devastating. Kids with lower I.Q's earn less, have bad behavior, are more likely to go to jail, have trouble in school, and have aggressive tendencies.
They will also earn less all their lives, and pay less tax. Over 5-10 years, we estimate that means a loss of $11 TRILLION to the American economy.
